Great Bali Trail ~ Stage 15
Hike Kintamani’s remote north rimAt a Glance
Highlights
An private full day hike traversing Kintamani’s remote north east crater rim, from the ancient Bali Aga village, Trunyan, enjoying rare views of Lombok’s Rinjani on a journey of extraordinary landscapes and arid ecosystems, home to the most elusive of Bali’s highland peoples.
For those of you love ridgelines and want to explore the remote north-east Kintamani Crater on foot, to discover views to the north coast and beyond to Lombok’s Rinjani, rarely seen by Bali’s regular tourists.
Ideal for:
- trail-fit intermediate-advanced hikers
- fast-packers and trail runners
- those who seek ridgelines & remoteness, away from crowds.
Not ideal for:
- newcomers to trail, beginners,
- children younger than age 13
- those who suffer from vertigo (heights)
This requires 2 days / 48 hrs advance booking time.
—
This route is far from Kintamani’s crowds, across Lake Batur from the main tourism destination. On setting off from Tunyan village, we will encounter some domestic hikers, however, after reaching the rim, we turn northwards to Trunyan Hill and progress along the remote crater rim, empty bar from hardy highland Kintamani farmers dotting their steep fields.
Kintamani’s elevation ranges 1000-1900m asl, allowing for all-day exploration in the relative cool to coastal Bali.

Trail Profile:
Terrain Notes:
This route is remote, with few if any “get-outs” after Trunyan. At halfway, the single track trail along the crater rim is very narrow and bushy, with extremely steep drop-offs both left and right. When the trail is maintained, passage is straightforward but requires focus.
Team idGuides and GBT 15 Village Partners who live and farm in this area, monitor the status of this route, and maintain it regularly. In case of a major storm or extended period of rainfall, this trail stage may need to be re-verified before idGuides authorise responsible passage. In this case, our Bookings Team will re-route your hike to a suitable alternative, as close to your trail adventure choice.
